Grand County Colorado – Granby and Fraser
Just back from 4 days of riding in Grand County Colorado. This is where Winter Park ski resort and town are located along with Fraser, Granby, and the town of Grand Lake.
The northern end of the county leads into Rocky Mtn National Park. Although close to Denver, there are limited ways to get to the county so the towns are small and population here sparse except along the highways. It rained 2 of the 4 days and I skipped out on the tent camping and expanded the trip at Grand Ranch in a summer condo rental.
Day 1, not having been to this area in many years, drove up to Grand Lake, visited the Grand Lake Lodge which was a historical site on Rocky Mtn National park land. I was surprised at the size of Granby Lake and the number of marinas. Grand Lake the town was a bit touristy, I first walked the boardwalk downtown, and waited out a good 40 minute downpour. It then cleared so I hopped on the bike and rode around town exploring the marina, and neighborhoods. All the downtown properties were small in size with mostly summer cabins througout town. Nice place to visit and the visitors worldwide, stop through here, to buy ‘ice cream’. Not many places to eat, but ice cream was being sold at each block.
Took a short detour to Hot Sulphur springs. Beside the hot springs facility which was large, the key feature in town was a Hot Sulphur Springs Candy store. Stopped in and supported the local economy by buying way more chocolate and black licorice that I would ever need.
Day 2 – Granby to Fraser Trail – The day was clear in the AM so I rode first thing expecting rain later in the day. Very scenic trail that wanders through Tabernash, and sparse neighborhoods, jeep roads and a variety of fairly simple terrain. This was a good ride to adjust to the altitude which I’ve learned is a good move before more challenging rides. Photos that follow are from this ride.
