Black Hills SD, Mickelson Trail North of Hill City

Rain is shaping the schedule these first couple of days. But up early and I completed this segment before rain around 4pm. Stopped for a buffalo steak which was awesome. The Mickelson Trail used to be a rail line, so gentle grades with long climbs and long downhills runs. The trails is maintained well and in excellent condition.

A typical trailside view from the Black Hills region in South Dakota.

Railroad tunnels along the way. You can smell the coal from old steam engines inside.

Much cooler inside.

Every trestle has the smell of treated lumber.

Real cistern well hand pumps along the way.
Recent rains causing minor damage but staff is already on it.

Cross traffic.
