Farrier Day at the Ranch

Sept 3, 2020 – An interesting day as many horses get their hooves worked on. Farrier – a person who fits horseshoes onto horses. Shown is a scene that happens every six weeks. On this day, over a dozen horses get their feet worked on. Two large vehicles pull up and out jump a team of 8 farriers who quickly get to business on various horses. It is hard work and more than one cut or bruise is delivered to the team. A couple of the horses act up and don’t want to participate. Most of the horses resign themselves to the activity and the work completes for them much quicker.

An interested set of tools is used. This puller removes the shoe first. A trim and re-shoeing follows for most.
Some of the more cooperative
This horse was difficult and took much longer to complete work on.
Rasps, files, and carving knifes contour the hoof to fit an appropriately sized shoe.
Here’s Curly getting his hoofs trimmed. He does not have horseshoes. Not all horses have shoes for various reasons I don’t understand.
Note the grinder which swiveled from the back of the van.
I was lucky to capture this moment with a guest and the horse ‘Tigger’.
