FIBARK – First in Boating on the Arkansas

FIBARK – First in Boating on the Arkansas.
2017 marks the 69th anniversary of FIBArk, the nation’s oldest whitewater festival and Salida’s signature event. Since 1949, every June during the Spring snow runoff, Salida has hosted FIBArk, “First in Boating on the Arkansas.”

So this is the event I timed to attend while here in Salida. I started with a bike ride through town along a Monarch spur trail. I found the Ride the Rockies final destination event at a local park. The town hosted this several times in the past so it was running smooth and mellow as riders finished their 440+ miles over 5 days. Then clamored for a good view to shoot photos. Ruined many shots due to glare off the water. The shores get packed especially for the Hooligan Races on Saturday. This year bikes where jumping into the water along with many odd homemade watercraft. The next morning I head out of town, and ate a wrapped bear claw from a gas station. Breakfast places where packed even in Buena Vista.

Thinking already of the next trip.

Most of the boats at the hooligan races, crumpled during transit.

It’s hard enough to stand on these in calm waters.
